Many Black Germans were also descendants of Black <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Askari\" target=\"_blank\">Askari<\/a> troops recruited from Germany\u2019s former colonies. Thousands of these men had fought and died for Kaiser Wilhelm during the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_I\" target=\"_blank\">First World War<\/a> in Germany\u2019s East African campaign.[i]<\/p>\n<p>Living within a self proclaimed \u201cwhite\u201d society with a history of misunderstanding, mistreating, and misrepresenting \u201cPeople of Color,\u201d life was never easy. This was especially so since much of the Colonial German literature at that time depicted Africa and its people in a negative light. The sexuality of African women and men was often described in white colonial literature in base, animalistic ways. In the 1800\u2019s there were even exotic exhibitions of live human zoos[1] where African individuals[2] were displayed in recreated African villages within regular zoos and toured through major European metropolises including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hamburg\" target=\"_blank\">Hamburg<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berlin\" target=\"_blank\">Berlin<\/a>.[ii]<\/p>\n<p>The end of the First World War and the occupation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhineland\" target=\"_blank\">Rhineland<\/a> by French soldiers, including many Afro French soldiers, resulted in the birth of another generation Afro German children that were often referred to within German society by degrading terms such as <em>Besatzungskinder<\/em> \u201cWar Babies\u201d or <em>Rheinlandbastard<\/em> \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhineland_Bastard\" target=\"_blank\">Rhineland Bastard<\/a>.\u201d[iii] For white German nationalists the occupation and policing of the former German colonizer by Black African solders was the final humiliation&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/arrivinginthefuture.com\/2015\/01\/20\/rhineland-children\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rhineland Children Arriving In The Future: Stories of Home and Exile 2015-01-20 Asoka Esuruoso &amp; Philipp Khabo Koepsell Germany\u2019s brief colonial period saw an increase in the community of Africans and Afro Germans in Germany.
