Jones<\/a> has long struggled with the idea of checking more than one box. Her reluctance to do so has been influenced by a lifetime of changing perceptions about her own identity. Born to an interracial couple a decade before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on the legality of such a relationship in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=415\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Loving v. Virginia<\/em><\/a>, Jones, who co-directs the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.umich.edu\/centersandprograms\/racelawhistory\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Program in Race, Law &amp; History<\/a> at U-M, crossed the color line at birth.<\/p>\n<p>As the featured speaker for Michigan Law\u2019s Martin Luther King Jr. Day lecture last month, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.law.umich.edu\/flashmedia\/public\/Default.aspx?mediaid=14609\" target=\"_blank\">Jones reflected on her mixed-race experience<\/a> to open up an understanding of how legal culture has wrestled with the idea that Americans might check more than one box of racial identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I\u2019m going to be asking myself, \u2018How does it feel to be a problem?\u2019\u201d Jones said, looking to address the same question contemporaries of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/W._E._B._Du_Bois\" target=\"_blank\">W.E.B.
