I\u2019m there alone. The hostess is hawkeyed at the cash register, as if I\u2019m going to steal her silverware. She eventually moseys up to my booth. \u201cDo you have a tan, or is that your natural skin color?\u201d she asks. Natural, I tell her. \u201cWhat are you?\u201d I give her three guesses. \u201cHawaiian?\u201d Nope. \u201cSamoan?\u201d Getting colder. At this point, a nearby server who\u2019s been eavesdropping on the conversation decides to join in. \u201cPuerto Rican,\u201d he says. Wrong. \u201cDominican.\u201d Wrong again.
