{"id":40193,"date":"2015-03-01T22:22:41","date_gmt":"2015-03-01T22:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=40193"},"modified":"2015-03-01T22:22:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-01T22:22:41","slug":"the-ins-and-outs-of-diversity-in-the-dominican-republic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=40193","title":{"rendered":"The Ins and Outs of Diversity in the Dominican Republic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/latina.com\/lifestyle\/our-issues\/diversity-latinos-dominican-republic\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>The Ins and Outs of Diversity in the Dominican Republic<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/latina.com\" target=\"_blank\">Latina<\/a><br \/>\n2015-02-26<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cindy Rodriguez<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/latina.com\/lifestyle\/our-issues\/diversity-latinos-dominican-republic\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/latina.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/main-image-article\/public\/domin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to debunk the stereotypes on what exactly a \u201cDominican looks like,\u201d Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UsDominicans809\" target=\"_blank\">UsDominicans809<\/a> posted a photo of a group of beautiful women (er, possibly models?) who are all super diverse in physical identity along with a sassy tweet.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey&#8217;re all dominican; so next time somebody says &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/usdominicans809\/status\/365949341241847809\" target=\"_blank\">you don&#8217;t look dominican<\/a>&#8221; tell that dumbass, we&#8217;re all unique,\u201d as written by user UsDominicans809.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This comment accurately encompasses the identity struggle Latinos in the U.S. go through day in and day out which is why pieces like \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latina.com\/lifestyle\/our-issues\/things-shouldnt-say-latinos\" target=\"_blank\">Things You Shouldn\u2019t Say To Latinos<\/a>,\u201d or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latina.com\/lifestyle\/our-issues\/things-black-afro-latinas-are-tired-hearing\" target=\"_blank\">Afro-Latinos<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latina.com\/lifestyle\/light-skinned-pale-latina-problems\" target=\"_blank\">often overlooked pale Latinas<\/a> do so well. They reflect all the misconceptions that go with the Latino identity.<\/p>\n<p>First, Latinos are not a race, it\u2019s an ethnicity; but you knew that already. Latin America&#8217;s diverse racial demographics are the result of a mixed-race background from European, African and indigenous cultures.<\/p>\n<p>But if you didn\u2019t already know\u2026 race in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominican_Republic\" target=\"_blank\">Dominican Republic<\/a> is way more complicated than in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Here, you either fall under a handful of categories: Asian, Black, White, India, and so forth but, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2013-11-14\/theres-long-story-behind-anti-haitianismo-dominican-republic\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Public Radio International<\/em><\/a>, Dominicans use an array of words to self-identify their degree of \u201cblackness\u201d, for lack of a better term, like: <em>moreno, trigueno<\/em>, and <em>blanco-oscuro<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Which is odd because \u201cmore than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theroot.com\/articles\/history\/2011\/08\/dominicans_and_race_dont_call_them_black.html\" target=\"_blank\">90 percent of Dominicans possess some degree of African descent<\/a> &#8212; and that the very first rebellion of black slaves occurred here in 1522,\u201d according to <em>The Root<\/em>.
