Before I\u2019m even asked my name, people inquire about my race.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ever since authoring the popular post \u201cYou\u2019re Black; So Why Do You Talk White?<\/a>\u201d I\u2019ve been considering writing a piece about how I often I\u2019m asked by strangers what my race is. But after viewing a video clip yesterday from Bill Duke\u2019s<\/a> new documentary \u201cLight Girls<\/a>,\u201c where women with light complexions share the common experience of being questioned about their race, I decided it was time to tell my story.<\/p>\n

For the record, I know I\u2019m black, and many of life\u2019s experiences have reminded me of that. However, many people I\u2019ve encountered, particularly in my early twenties, were convinced otherwise and weren\u2019t afraid to let me know it.<\/p>\n

I was a few months shy of age 21 when I left Philadelphia<\/a> and moved to Austin, Texas<\/a>. I had been preparing myself for the subtle and blatant racism that a young black kid from the hood like me was going to receive. But all the training in the world couldn\u2019t have prepared me for the level of ignorance that greeted me in corporate America…<\/p>\n
