Motion picture and television studio STX Entertainment has begun principal photography<\/a> on the theatrical feature The Free State of Jones<\/em><\/a> in and around New Orleans, Louisiana<\/a>, it was announced by Adam Fogelson, Chairman of STX Entertainment\u2019s Motion Picture Group.<\/p>\n

The epic action-drama is written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross<\/a> (The Hunger Games<\/em>, Seabiscuit<\/em>, Pleasantville<\/em>), and stars Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey<\/a> (Interstellar<\/em>, Dallas Buyers Club<\/em>), Gugu Mbatha-Raw<\/a> (Beyond the Lights<\/em>), Keri Russell<\/a> (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes<\/em>) and Mahershala Ali<\/a> (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1<\/em>, \u201cHouse of Cards\u201d)…<\/p>\n

…Set during the Civil War<\/a>, The Free State of Jones<\/em> tells the story of defiant Southern farmer Newt Knight<\/a>, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy<\/a>. Banding together with other small farmers, and with the assistance of local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi<\/a> to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones.<\/p>\n

His marriage to a former slave, Rachel, and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction<\/a>, which distinguished him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.<\/p>\n
