But when it came to race, she was clueless.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez tells her daughter, Judy, in this week\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbez.org\/series\/storycorps\" target=\"_blank\">StoryCorps<\/a>, \u201cIn my hometown, it was Mexicans and whites. We didn\u2019t have any idea about blacks or Germans or Italians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosa Ramirez served four years in the military before moving to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a>, where she met her future husband.
