Blow<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>A University of Oklahoma Fraternity\u2019s Chant and the Rigidity of Racism<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This week, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uiDObfdw22s\" target=\"_blank\">video was posted<\/a> showing members of the University of Oklahoma\u2019s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon gleefully engaged in a racist chant on a bus, some people were shocked. Others, like me, were not.<\/p>\n<p>This was just video confirmation of a racism that envelops us like a fog, often just as evanescent and immeasurable.<\/p>\n<p>Some people seemed surprised because these were millennials, and college students to boot. Both because of generational easing and educational enlightenment, weren\u2019t these sorts of things supposed to be vestiges of the past?<\/p>\n<p>After all, as the Pew Research Center put it last year, \u201cMillennials are the most racially diverse generation in American history,\u201d with \u201csome 43 percent of millennial adults\u201d being nonwhite.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/2010\/02\/01\/almost-all-millennials-accept-interracial-dating-and-marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\">2010 Pew report<\/a> found that \u201calmost all millennials accept interracial dating and marriage.\u201d An MTV poll of millennials found that \u201c84 percent say their family taught them that everyone should be treated the same, no matter what their race,\u201d and that 89 percent \u201cdo believe that everyone should be treated the same no matter their race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But these numbers can be deceiving.
