Twitty<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>New tests confirmed what my family had long known: our ancestors were children of their Irish-American slaveholders<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Like many African Americans, I was excited by the possibility of using <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genetic_testing\" target=\"_blank\">DNA tests<\/a> to learn about my cultural roots before they were severed by centuries of slavery, obfuscation and the destruction of records. Today, I\u2019m proud to say that multiple tests have confirmed my roots among ethnic groups living <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghana\" target=\"_blank\">Ghana<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sierra_Leone\" target=\"_blank\">Sierra Leone<\/a> and other countries in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Africa\" target=\"_blank\">West<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_Africa\" target=\"_blank\">Central Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the tests also confirmed the legacy of slavery in quite another way: my family,<strong> like most black American families, has not one but several white ancestors<\/strong> \u2013 men who took advantage of their access to young enslaved women and, in the process, increased the number of human beings they called property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKiss Me, I\u2019m Irish\u201d took on a whole new meaning for me, when I discovered that I was&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2015\/mar\/17\/irish-african-american-dna-tests\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Kiss me, I&#8217;m Irish&#8217; took on a new meaning when DNA proved that I was The Guardian 2015-03-17 Michael W.
