Harris<\/a>, a Democrat, was the newly elected district attorney of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco<\/a> in 2004, she walked into a firestorm after deciding not to pursue the death penalty for a man accused in the killing of a police officer \u2014 drawing attacks from law enforcement leaders and even Senator <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dianne_Feinstein\" target=\"_blank\">Dianne Feinstein<\/a>, one of the most respected Democrats in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Six years later, when Ms. Harris ran for state attorney general, national Republicans poured more than $1 million into the race, trying to defeat her with charged advertisements invoking the death penalty case. Ms. Harris barely defeated her Republican opponent, the district attorney of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But now, at age 50 and after winning a second term, Ms. Harris has suddenly established herself as the dominant candidate in the race to replace <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbara_Boxer\" target=\"_blank\">Senator Barbara Boxer<\/a>, a Democrat who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/01\/09\/us\/politics\/senator-barbara-boxer-says-she-wont-seek-re-election-in-2016.html\" target=\"_blank\">announced in January<\/a> that she would retire next year.
