{"id":40845,"date":"2015-04-13T00:23:27","date_gmt":"2015-04-13T00:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=40845"},"modified":"2015-04-13T00:23:27","modified_gmt":"2015-04-13T00:23:27","slug":"the-afro-latino-experience-in-the-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=40845","title":{"rendered":"The Afro-Latino experience in the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/voxxi.com\/2012\/02\/09\/the-afro-latino-experience-in-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>The Afro-Latino experience in the U.S.<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/voxxi.com\" target=\"_blank\">VOXXI<\/a><br \/>\n2012-02-09<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rosalbaruiz\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rosalba Ruiz<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Growing up in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">South Los Angeles<\/a> in the 1970\u2019s, Armando Brown never thought about his multiracial identity.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen I was growing up, I was black,\u201d Brown, a 45-year-old photojournalist, says. \u201cIt was never an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The son of a creole man from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\" target=\"_blank\">New Orleans<\/a> and a dark-skinned Mexican woman, Brown has a dark complexion and wavy hair.<\/p>\n<p>His family lived in a black neighborhood that remained that way for years because of segregation. But little by little, Latino immigrants started moving in. Then, after the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1992_Los_Angeles_riots\" target=\"_blank\">1992 Los Angeles Riots<\/a>, black families that could afford it started moving out. The dynamic of the community changed, and so did how people interacted with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome black people started saying, \u2018hey, amigo!\u2019 and Latinos would want to speak Spanish to me,\u201d he remembers. But he couldn\u2019t hold conversations with them because Spanish wasn\u2019t spoken at his home, so he understands some of the language but doesn\u2019t speak it.<\/p>\n<p>Brown\u2019s experience reflects that of the more than one million Latinos of black ancestry in the United States.
