{"id":41313,"date":"2015-06-07T20:07:02","date_gmt":"2015-06-07T20:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=41313"},"modified":"2015-06-07T20:07:02","modified_gmt":"2015-06-07T20:07:02","slug":"crowes-whitewashing-sparks-criticism-from-advocates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=41313","title":{"rendered":"Crowe&#8217;s &#8216;whitewashing&#8217; sparks criticism from advocates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-33017006\" target=\"_blank\">Crowe&#8217;s &#8216;whitewashing&#8217; sparks criticism from advocates<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/new\" target=\"_blank\">BBC News<\/a><br \/>\n2015-06-07<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/elenaboffetta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elena Boffetta<\/a><\/strong>, BBC Washington<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinema_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood&#8217;s<\/a> reliance on bankable &#8211; and often white &#8211; actors has led to another round of sharp criticism of filmmakers for &#8220;whitewashing&#8221; roles where race and ethnicity play a part.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aloha_(film)\" target=\"_blank\">Aloha<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cameron_Crowe\" target=\"_blank\">Cameron Crowe&#8217;s<\/a> latest film, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emma_Stone\" target=\"_blank\">Emma Stone<\/a>, a American actress with blonde hair and green eyes, was cast as Allison Ng &#8211; a junior fighter pilot who was part-Chinese, part-Hawaiian and part-Swedish.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after the release, there was an uproar of criticism from social media against Crowe&#8217;s casting choice.<\/p>\n<p>Both Asians and non-Asians asked why they didn&#8217;t pick an Asian actress to play a character who is part-Asian.<\/p>\n<p>One advocacy group called <em>Aloha<\/em> &#8220;a whitewashed film&#8221; that failed to portray the ethnical diversity of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawaii\" target=\"_blank\">Hawaii<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/manaa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Media Action Network for Asian Americans<\/a> (MANAA) noted 60% of Hawaii&#8217;s population is Asian-American Pacific Islanders and 30% Caucasian, a fact not reflected in the film.<\/p>\n<p>Crowe apologised on his website but said he based the Ng character on a real-life redheaded Hawaiian who felt compelled to constantly over-explain her unlikely ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can understand what Crowe said about his intention that he based his character on someone that didn&#8217;t look Asian but identified with the culture but you could have casted someone who was part Hawaiian,&#8221; Guy Aoki, the founding president of MANAA, said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whitewashing&#8221; casting differs from &#8220;colour-blind casting,&#8221; where a role is cast when factors of race or ethnicity are irrelevant to the character or plot&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinema_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood<\/a> has been accused of whitewashing Asians for decades&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-33017006\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crowe&#8217;s &#8216;whitewashing&#8217; sparks criticism from advocates BBC News 2015-06-07 Elena Boffetta, BBC Washington Hollywood&#8217;s reliance on bankable &#8211; and often white &#8211; actors has led to another round of sharp criticism of filmmakers for &#8220;whitewashing&#8221; roles where race and ethnicity play a part.
