In 2013, it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/white-deaths-outnumber-births-for-first-time\/2013\/06\/13\/3bb1017c-d388-11e2-a73e-826d299ff459_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a> that more whites were dying than were being born. In March, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2015\/cb15-tps16.html\" target=\"_blank\">projected<\/a> that non-Hispanic whites would be a minority by 2044.<\/p>\n<p>But the forecast of an imminent white minority, which some take as a given, is wrong. We will seem like a majority-white society for much longer than is believed.<\/p>\n<p>The predictions make sense only if you accept the outdated, illogical methods used by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/interactives\/multiracial-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\">census<\/a>, which define as a \u201cminority\u201d anyone who belongs to \u201cany group other than non-Hispanic White alone.\u201d In the words \u201cgroup\u201d and \u201calone\u201d lie a host of confusions.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=41356\" target=\"_blank\">report the Pew Research Center<\/a> is releasing today on multiracial Americans demonstrates how problematic these definitions have become. Pew estimates that 8.9 percent of Americans now have family backgrounds that involve some combination of white, black, Latino, Asian and Native American.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMixed\u201d unions \u2014 intermarriages and long-lasting cohabitations \u2014 have become far more common. According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=7479\" target=\"_blank\">2012 Pew report<\/a>, 15 percent of new marriages cross the major lines of race or Hispanic origin. Some 70 percent of these relationships involve a white partner and a minority spouse.
