{"id":41360,"date":"2015-06-11T23:44:59","date_gmt":"2015-06-11T23:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=41360"},"modified":"2015-06-11T23:44:59","modified_gmt":"2015-06-11T23:44:59","slug":"im-middle-eastern-and-white-and-those-are-not-the-same-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=41360","title":{"rendered":"I\u2019m Middle Eastern And White, And Those Are Not The Same Thing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xojane.com\/issues\/middle-eastern-people-need-their-own-racial-classification-in-the-us\" target=\"_blank\">I\u2019m Middle Eastern And White, And Those Are Not The Same Thing<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xojane.com\" target=\"_blank\">xoJane<\/a><br \/>\n2015-06-08<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ericapishdadian\" target=\"_blank\">Erica Pishdadian<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s time to stop the confusion and give Middle Eastern and North African people our own racial classification.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I recently moved to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\">New York City<\/a>, and in between my two favorite hobbies (climbing up to my fifth floor apartment and sobbing over the state of my post-broker-fee bank account), I\u2019ve been filling out a lot of job applications.<\/p>\n<p>Agonizing over my resume and writing endless cover letters is time-consuming, but the most annoying part of the application process for me has nothing to do with trying to fit why I\u2019m useful into a few short paragraphs.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m most aggravated by one of the simplest parts of the application: the \u201cPlease Select Your Race\u201d portion.<\/p>\n<p>My father is Iranian, and my mother is a mix of Western European. According to the Census definitions, I\u2019m white. And that\u2019s true; I am. But I\u2019m only half white, because Middle Eastern and white are not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/topics\/population\/race\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\">United States Census Bureau\u2019s definition of white<\/a> is \u201ca person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first time I remember filling in a bubble for this question, I was in elementary school. I had to ask my teacher which races I counted as, and when she told me, all I could think about was how much darker I was than the kids around me.
