{"id":41534,"date":"2015-06-23T00:11:18","date_gmt":"2015-06-23T00:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=41534"},"modified":"2015-06-23T00:11:18","modified_gmt":"2015-06-23T00:11:18","slug":"joseph-emidy-from-slave-fiddler-to-classical-violinist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=41534","title":{"rendered":"Joseph Emidy: From slave fiddler to classical violinist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-cornwall-33211440\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Emidy: From slave fiddler to classical violinist<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\" target=\"_blank\">BBC News<\/a><br \/>\n2015-06-21<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/milesodavis\" target=\"_blank\">Miles Davis<\/a><\/strong>, BBC News Online<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-cornwall-33211440\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/660\/cpsprodpb\/16D60\/production\/_83763539_josephemidy1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Joseph Emidy led the Truro Philharmonic Orchestra <\/small><\/p>\n<p><em>The remarkable life of a former slave who became a pioneer of classical music has been commemorated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;genius&#8221; violinist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Antonio_Emidy\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Emidy<\/a>, from West Africa, was enslaved for two long periods of his eventful life.<\/p>\n<p>But having finally gained his freedom in 1799, Emidy became &#8220;Britain&#8217;s first composer of the African diaspora&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>His achievements were marked at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Truro_Cathedral\" target=\"_blank\">Truro Cathedral<\/a> on Sunday with the erection of a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/boss\" target=\"_blank\">boss<\/a>&#8216; &#8211; a painted wooden carving featuring a violin and a map of Africa.<\/p>\n<p>On his death in 1835, The West Briton newspaper reported in Emidy&#8217;s obituary: &#8220;As an orchestral composer, his sinfonias may be mentioned as evincing not only deep musical research, but also those flights of genius.&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Emidy was finally discharged four years later in the port of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Falmouth,_Cornwall\" target=\"_blank\">Falmouth<\/a> on 28 February 1799.<\/p>\n<p>He married a local woman, Jenefer Hutchins, in 1802, started taking on music students and became involved with the the first of Truro&#8217;s biennial concerts in 1804.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"552\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-cornwall-33211440\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/11F40\/production\/_83763537_img_0421.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Beverley Wilson (far right) the great, great, great, great grand-daughter of Joseph Emidy met <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kora_(instrument)\" target=\"_blank\">kora <\/a>player <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonajobarteh.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sona Jobarteh<\/a> (centre)<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Silk_Buckingham\" target=\"_blank\">Silk Buckingham<\/a> described him as &#8220;an exquisite violinist, a good composer, who led at all the concerts of the county, and who taught equally well the piano, violin, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cello\" target=\"_blank\">violoncello<\/a>, clarionet and flute&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-cornwall-33211440\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joseph Emidy: From slave fiddler to classical violinist BBC News 2015-06-21 Miles Davis, BBC News Online Joseph Emidy led the Truro Philharmonic Orchestra The remarkable life of a former slave who became a pioneer of classical music has been commemorated.
