She has written a memoir and a children\u2019s book, and has more than a half-million <a href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/mistyonpointe\/\" target=\"_blank\">followers on Instagram<\/a>. An online ad she made for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZY0cdXr_1MA\" target=\"_blank\">Under Armour<\/a> has been viewed more than 8 million times, and she is the subject of a documentary screened this year at the Tribeca Film Festival&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;That race could still be such an issue in 2015 \u2014 and African-American dancers still so rarely seen at elite ballet companies \u2014 has been depressing to many dancegoers, and has led to impassioned discussions in the dance world and beyond about race, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mybodymyimage.com\/the-misty-rious-case-of-the-vanishing-ballerinas-of-color-where-have-all-the-others-gone\" target=\"_blank\">stereotypes and image<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than a half-century has passed since the pioneering black dancer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_Mitchell_(dancer)\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur Mitchell<\/a> broke through the color barrier and became a principal dancer at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City_Ballet\" target=\"_blank\">New York City Ballet<\/a> in 1962, and a generation has elapsed since <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lauren_Anderson_(dancer)\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren Anderson<\/a> became the first African-American principal at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Houston_Ballet\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Ballet<\/a>, in 1990. But City Ballet has had only two black principal dancers in its history, both men: Mr. Mitchell and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albert_Evans_(dancer)\" target=\"_blank\">Albert Evans<\/a>, who died last week.
