href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a>.\u2002Many came from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sinaloa\" target=\"_blank\">Sinaloa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonora\" target=\"_blank\">Sonora, Mexico<\/a>, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juan_Bautista_de_Anza#California_expeditions\" target=\"_blank\">Anza Expedition<\/a> in 1775, and helped to shape the character of California, building and establishing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pueblo\" target=\"_blank\">pueblos<\/a> and ranches that grew into towns such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Diego\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monterey,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Monterey<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Jose,_California\" target=\"_blank\">San Jose<\/a>.\u2002Several became wealthy landowners and politicians, including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P%C3%ADo_Pico\" target=\"_blank\">Pio Pico<\/a>, the last governor of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alta_California\" target=\"_blank\">Mexican
