She was, until recently, the President of the <a href=\"http:\/\/spokanenaacp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NAACP chapter in Spokane, Washington<\/a> and a very vocal proponent of black issues within that community. Her construction of a \u2018black\u2019 identity is both intricate and mystifying, it\u2019s a deceit that forces us to ask \u2013 how did no one know she was white? Rachel\u2019s performance of black womanhood has thrust global scrutiny onto debates about the constructions of blackness. In the book \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/31254\/31254-h\/31254-h.htm\" target=\"_blank\">The Conservation of Races<\/a>\u2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/W._E._B._Du_Bois\" target=\"_blank\">W.E.B. Du Bois<\/a> argues that race is a \u2018socio-historical construct\u2019: a construct defined as much by the emotional, spiritual and psychological, as it is by the societal. The historical context comes from inheritance of a struggle, black culture has been defined by its resistance \u2013 a place where we can explore and celebrate our complexity.
