Mellon Foundation to explore how place has impacted the role of race in the Americas.<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/history.rutgers.edu\/faculty-directory\/97-bay-mia\" target=\"_blank\">Mia Bay\u2019s<\/a> mother always thought it was odd that on a plane trip in the 1950s, she just happened to be seated next to the only other black person on the flight.<\/p>\n<p>Bay, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/raceethnicity.rutgers.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rutgers Center for Race and Ethnicity<\/a>, didn\u2019t think much of her mother&#8217;s story, until she began researching her upcoming book about segregated transportation in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one ever talks about segregation on planes, but I found there was a secret code used to make sure that all black people sat in the same row,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>For Bay, the little known history of airline segregation illustrates the ways in which\u00a0 definitions of race, and the experiences of racial minorities, have differed from place to place\u2014whether it\u2019s a city block, a railroad car, or an airplane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica\u2019s racial maps have always been complex and contradictory, subject to changing laws and shifting borders.\u201d\u00a0\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/history.rutgers.edu\/faculty-directory\/professors\/201-fabian-ann\" target=\"_blank\">Ann Fabian<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is black and who is white is decided by different calculations, in different places; as is who is Indian and who is not,\u201d says Bay, a professor of history in the <a href=\"http:\/\/sas.rutgers.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">School of Arts and Sciences<\/a> (SAS)\u00a0 \u201cThe racial classification of many ethnic groups changes over time; and some societies adopt multiracial categories, while others do not.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/news.rutgers.edu\/issue.2011-10-04.4816890733\/article.2011-10-21.2520324144\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rutgers Takes a Yearlong Look at Race, Place and Space in the Americas Rutgers Today Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey 2011-10-21 Carrie Stetler History professors Ann Fabian, left, and Mia Bay have been awarded a $175,000 grant from the Andrew W.
