When I objected, she told me, \u201cStop being so picky. Not many guys are willing to consider a black girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As an African-American Orthodox Jew, this was hardly my first encounter with the questionable treatment I and my fellow Jews of color endure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goy\" target=\"_blank\">goy<\/a> here?\u201d one black Jewish parent overheard when taking her child to a Jewish children\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>At one <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yeshiva\" target=\"_blank\">yeshiva<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn<\/a>, the mother of a biracial student was asked to stay away from the school because it made the other parents uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>An African-American acquaintance told me he overheard a worshiper at morning <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minyan\" target=\"_blank\">minyan<\/a> talk about how he didn\u2019t want to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_prayer\" target=\"_blank\">daven<\/a> with a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/w\/index.php?search=shvartze&amp;title=Special%3ASearch&amp;fulltext=1\" target=\"_blank\">shvartze<\/a>\u201d \u2013 while my acquaintance was putting on his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tefillin\" target=\"_blank\">tefillin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Orthodox society is a beautiful community dedicated to charity, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torah\" target=\"_blank\">Torah<\/a> learning and growth through observance of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitzvah\" target=\"_blank\">mitzvahs<\/a> \u2013 and I believe we\u2019re better than this racism suggests&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jta.org\/2015\/07\/16\/news-opinion\/united-states\/op-ed-its-time-to-confront-racism-in-orthodox-jewish-community\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Op-Ed: For black Orthodox Jews, constant racism is exhausting Jewish Telegraphic Agency New York, New York 2015-07-16 Chava Shervington, President Jewish Multiracial Network NEW YORK (JTA) \u2013 When I was 24, an Orthodox matchmaker tried to set me up on a date with a man older than my parents.
