There was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lando_Calrissian\" target=\"_blank\">Lando Calrissian<\/a> \u2013 the smooth talking, caped czar of Cloud City in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_Wars_Episode_V:_The_Empire_Strikes_Back\" target=\"_blank\">The Empire Strikes Back<\/a><\/em> \u2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roadblock_(G.I._Joe)\" target=\"_blank\">Roadblock<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G.I._Joe:_A_Real_American_Hero\" target=\"_blank\">G.I. Joe\u2019s<\/a> muscle-bound machine gunner. All of the others were white, aliens or costume clad villains of indeterminate race.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the absence of racial diversity didn\u2019t register. I was more concerned with having an equitable mix of good guys and bad guys for the elaborate imaginary battles I orchestrated on my bedroom floor and in the backyard.<\/p>\n<p>Now that I have an interracial son, my perspective has changed. I\u2019d love for him to have toys that serve as a jumping off point for his imagination. When I played with a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luke_Skywalker\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Skywalker<\/a> action figure, I wasn\u2019t a 5-year-old boy sitting in the sandbox. I was a future hero of the Rebel Alliance, staring across the dunes at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatooine\" target=\"_blank\">Tatooine\u2019s<\/a> twin sunset. Back then I had blonde hair.
