(I have a dear new friend who revisits <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/To_Kill_a_Mockingbird\" target=\"_blank\">To Kill a Mockingbird<\/a><\/em> every year for similar reasons and to see how his opinions on the text change over time.)<\/p>\n<p>Then there are books I have re-read because I just know that I didn\u2019t catch everything the author was throwing down the first time. And I\u2019m here to tell you, folks, that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fran_Ross\" target=\"_blank\">Fran Ross\u2019s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=41697\" target=\"_blank\">Oreo<\/a><\/em> is the queen of those books. <em>Oreo\u2019s<\/em> heroine\u2019s journey to find the \u201csecret of her birth\u201d had me laughing aloud and wrapping my brain around awesome word puzzles the entire time.<\/p>\n<p>Though originally published in 1974 (more on that later), <em>Oreo<\/em> was re-printed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Directions<\/a> in July of this year, and I was lucky enough to grab it right off our New Fiction shelves at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawrence.lib.ks.us\" target=\"_blank\">LPL<\/a> last week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire review\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawrence.lib.ks.us\/2015\/07\/one-tough-cookie-fran-rosss-oreo-written-decades-before-its-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One Tough Cookie: Fran Ross\u2019s \u201cOreo\u201d Written Decades Before Its Time Lawrence Public Library 707 Vermont Street Lawrence, Kansas 2015-07-31 Kate Gramlich There are a handful of books I have re-read several times because I found some deep, emotional connection with the characters, and each read is like a conversation with a dear old friend.
