Midway through postproduction on his eighth movie, the Western <\/em>THE HATEFUL EIGHT<\/a> \u2014 about a band of outlaws trapped in a saloon during a blizzard \u2014 the director discusses the country\u2019s legacy of white supremacy, Obama<\/a>, and why he doesn\u2019t worry about a <\/em>Transformers future.<\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019re five months from the release of The Hateful Eight<\/em><\/a>. How close to finishing are you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve got a little bit more than an hour finished right now. I just got back from seeing an hour of the movie cut together…<\/p>\n

…Hateful Eight uses the Civil War<\/a> as a backdrop, sort of like how The Good, the Bad and the Ugly<\/a> <\/em>does.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly<\/em> doesn\u2019t get into the racial conflicts of the Civil War; it\u2019s just a thing that\u2019s happening. My movie is about the country being torn apart by it, and the racial aftermath, six, seven, eight, ten years later.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s going to make this movie feel contemporary. Everybody\u2019s talking about race right now.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know. I\u2019m very excited by that.<\/p>\n

Excited?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, the issue of white supremacy is being talked about and dealt with. And it\u2019s what the movie\u2019s about.<\/p>\n

How did what\u2019s happening in Baltimore and Ferguson find its way into The Hateful Eight<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was already in the script. It was already in the footage we shot. It just happens to be timely right now. We\u2019re not trying to make it timely. It is timely. I love the fact that people are talking and dealing with the institutional racism that has existed in this country and been ignored. I feel like it\u2019s another \u201960s moment, where the people themselves had to expose how ugly they were before things could change. I\u2019m hopeful that that\u2019s happening now.<\/p>\n

You supported Obama<\/a>. How do you think he\u2019s done?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think he\u2019s fantastic. He\u2019s my favorite president, hands down, of my lifetime. He\u2019s been awesome this past year. Especially the rapid, one-after-another-after-another-after-another aspect of it. It\u2019s almost like take no prisoners. His he-doesn\u2019t-give-a-shit attitude has just been so cool. Everyone always talks about these lame-duck presidents. I\u2019ve never seen anybody end with this kind of ending. All the people who supported him along the way that questioned this or that and the other? All of their questions are being answered now…<\/p>\n
