Review: Trevor Noah Keeps \u2018Daily Show\u2019 DNA in Debut<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The post-Jon Stewart<\/a> version of \u201cThe Daily Show<\/a>\u201d that Trevor Noah<\/a> and Comedy Central<\/a> unveiled on Monday night was a bit like a new iPhone<\/a>. It was sleeker, fresher and redesigned. There were tweaks here and there \u2014 look, even a new font!<\/p>\n

But it still does essentially the same thing.<\/p>\n

Sure, the 31-year-old, South African-born Mr. Noah<\/a> is a new face and voice. Likening Mr. Stewart to a comedic father, he joked: \u201cNow it feels like the family has a new stepdad. And he\u2019s black<\/a>.\u201d Assured, handsome and with a crisp delivery, Mr. Noah was a smoother presenter than Mr. Stewart, who made an art form of sputtering and exasperated facepalming<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But if Mr. Noah\u2019s debut was largely successful, it was also because of the operating system \u2014 the show\u2019s writing \u2014 running under the surface. That algorithm, capable of processing a day\u2019s media inputs into a satirically argued package, is what makes \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d \u201cThe Daily Show.\u201d<\/a> This first outing was about proving that he could run the software without crashing…<\/p>\n
