So when a \u201cblack\u201d television show debuts, it\u2019s groundbreaking. And when Brazil\u2019s top black female and male actors star in it, it\u2019s a miracle.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks ago <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rede_Globo\" target=\"_blank\">Globo television<\/a> premiered \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mister_Brau\" target=\"_blank\">Mister Brau<\/a>,\u201d a weekly comedic show starring <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L%C3%A1zaro_Ramos\" target=\"_blank\">L\u00e1zaro Ramos<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ta%C3%ADs_Ara%C3%BAjo\" target=\"_blank\">Ta\u00eds Ara\u00fajo<\/a> as a successful pop music couple. They are also married in real life&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;For black Americans, the union between Ramos and Ara\u00fajo appears to be a perfect match. For Afro-Brazilians, it\u2019s a match that they rarely see. For the most part, rich and successful Afro-Brazilians do not marry black people. Soccer stars marry white women. Black Brazilian models marry white men. Militant black Brazilians always debate the reasons for this. But sociologists have concluded that rich Afro-Brazilians are usually exchanging status when they marry white. They provide the high socioeconomic status in exchange for whiteness, which has a high racial status in Brazil.
