Retired, they\u2019ve combined know-how with that passion to make the doc \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=42853\" target=\"_blank\">Korla, the Movie<\/a>,\u201d about organist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korla_Pandit\" target=\"_blank\">Korla Pandit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Turban-wearing Pandit, who said he was born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\">India<\/a>, had his own TV show in the late \u201940s and early \u201950s. He was known for playing exotic \u201cforeign\u201d music. He was living in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petaluma,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Petaluma<\/a> when he died, in 1998. A subsequent magazine profile revealed that he was African American, born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Missouri\" target=\"_blank\">Missouri<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A documentary about Pandit as an exotic performer \u2014 the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yma_Sumac\" target=\"_blank\">Yma Sumac <\/a>\u2014 would be interesting at any time. But now, in the midst of a national discussion about identity that intensified with the recent revelation that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rachel_Dolezal\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Dolezal<\/a> had chosen to identify as black, the movie\u2019s tale of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">passing<\/a>\u201d seems particularly relevant.
