He wore a jeweled turban and had these mesmerizing eyes that made women feel he could see right through them. Korla was this otherworldly, captivating guy, and we all thought he and his music were from another land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christensen, who lives in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mill_Valley,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Mill Valley<\/a>, and his former KGO TV colleague <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/search\/?action=search&amp;channel=movies&amp;inlineLink=1&amp;searchindex=gsa&amp;query=%22John+Turner%22\" target=\"_blank\">John Turner<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berkeley,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Berkeley<\/a> have chronicled Pandit\u2019s life story in their new documentary \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=42853\" target=\"_blank\">Korla<\/a>,\u201d which has its <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_Bay_Area\" target=\"_blank\">Bay Area<\/a> premiere at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CB8QFjAAahUKEwiUzpC1osDIAhUFeT4KHbOzCkE&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.moadsf.org%2F&amp;usg=AFQjCNFnQozi8mjChNpIClSM1zO34R8KkA\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco\u2019s Museum of the African Diaspora<\/a> on Aug. 20.<\/p>\n<p>From his first 1949 episodes of \u201cAdventures in Music\u201d on Southern California\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/KTLA\" target=\"_blank\">KTLA<\/a>, Pandit rode an almost 50-year-long wave of success \u2014 as a TV sensation, prolific recording artist (13 albums with Berkeley\u2019s Fantasy Records) and \u201cgrandfather of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exotica\" target=\"_blank\">exotica music<\/a>\u201d \u2014 based not only on his keyboard prowess but on his enigmatic swami persona.<\/p>\n<p>With his heavily <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/kohl\" target=\"_blank\">kohl<\/a>-rimmed eyes and upturned half-smile, Pandit coaxed unusual sounds from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hammond_organ\" target=\"_blank\">Hammond B-3 organ<\/a>, playing \u201cmusical gems from far and near\u201d \u2014 faux-Polynesian sounds, Hawaiian war chants, \u201chypnotiques\u201d \u2014 while extolling the virtues of \u201cdivine consciousness\u201d and \u201cthe universal language of music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet, unbeknownst to his legions of fans until after his death in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petaluma,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Petaluma<\/a> in 1998, at age 77, Pandit\u2019s hypnotic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Svengali\" target=\"_blank\">Svengali<\/a> look and supposedly Hindu name were part of an expertly crafted fiction of self-invention. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=42835\" target=\"_blank\">magazine profile by R. J. Smith in 2001<\/a> revealed that Pandit was actually African American, a minister\u2019s son born <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korla_Pandit\" target=\"_blank\">John Roland Redd<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbia,_Missouri\" target=\"_blank\">Columbia, Mo<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;The film incorporates interviews with music and sociology experts \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carlos_Santana\" target=\"_blank\">Carlos Santana<\/a> (who likens Pandit to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miles_Davis\" target=\"_blank\">Miles Davis<\/a>), The Chronicle\u2019s <em>Radio Waves<\/em> columnist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benfongtorres.com\/Biography\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Fong-Torres<\/a> and UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Edwards_(sociologist)\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Edwards<\/a> \u2014 as well as with Pandit\u2019s nephew Gary Cloud, to examine, says Christensen, \u201cthis amazing act, even by show business standards. This wasn\u2019t an act that occurred onstage for an hour or two, this was 24\/7, all through his life. Korla put on this persona and couldn\u2019t take it off.
