Allyson\u2019s first book, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=36295\" target=\"_blank\">A Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life<\/a>,\u201d published by Harvard University Press in 2014, examines the phenomenon of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">racial passing<\/a> in the United States from the late eighteenth century to the present. \u201cA Chosen Exile\u201d won two prizes from the Organization of American Historians: the Frederick Jackson Turner Award for best first book in American history and the Lawrence W. Levine Award for best book in American cultural history. The book was selected as a New York <em>Times Book Review<\/em> Editor\u2019s Choice, a \u201cBest Book of 2014\u201d by the San Francisco <em>Chronicle<\/em>, and a \u201cBook of the Week\u201d by the <em>Times Higher Education<\/em> in London.
