A screen siren with smouldering looks, exotic features and almond-shaped eyes. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Merle_Oberon\" target=\"_blank\">Merle Oberon<\/a> was described as graceful and hauntingly beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>On her ascent, in 1939, she captivated the world in the box office <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinema_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood<\/a> hit, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wuthering_Heights_(1939_film)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Wuthering Heights<\/em><\/a>, playing Cathy opposite <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laurence_Olivier\" target=\"_blank\">Laurence Olivier <\/a>as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heathcliff_(Wuthering_Heights)\" target=\"_blank\">Heathcliff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From the other side of the globe, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tasmania\" target=\"_blank\">Tasmanians<\/a> glowed with pride. Oberon, according to a biography that read like a Hollywood film script, had been born in Hobart, the daughter of an upper-class white colonial family. She left Tasmania for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\">India<\/a> after her distinguished father died in a hunting accident, and was raised there by aristocratic godparents.<\/p>\n<p>If <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Errol_Flynn\" target=\"_blank\">Errol Flynn<\/a> was the island state&#8217;s favourite son, Merle Oberon was its treasured daughter. In 1978, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hobart_Town_Hall\" target=\"_blank\">Hobart Town Hall<\/a> hosted a function attended by well-known local identities to welcome her back. Decades later, Tasmanians proudly recount stories and anecdotes about the hometown girl who blazed her way to Hollywood. Only Oberon wasn&#8217;t born in Tasmania.
