In her new book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=42766\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Remixing Reggaet\u00f3n: The Cultural Politics of Race in Puerto Rico<\/em><\/a>, scholar <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sociology.vt.edu\/People\/Faculty\/PRivera_Rideau.html\" target=\"_blank\">Petra Rivera-Rideau<\/a> challenges this idea through the prism of a genre of urban music that gained momentum in impoverished neighborhoods on the island and ultimately became a global pop phenomenon.Read the entire article here.<\/p>\n<p>Positing that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reggaeton\" target=\"_blank\">reggaet\u00f3n<\/a> challenges the racial democracy myth, <em>Remixing Reggaet\u00f3n<\/em> focuses on leading <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puerto_Rico\" target=\"_blank\">Puerto Rican<\/a> artists like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tego_Calder%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\">Tego Calderon <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ivy_Queen\" target=\"_blank\">Ivy Queen<\/a>, who are shifting traditional views on gender, sexuality, and race through provocative, unapologetic performances.
