The forum will include a <a href=\"http:\/\/historyfilmforum.si.edu\/schedule\/discussion-free-state-jones-gary-ross\/\" target=\"_blank\">panel discussion<\/a> of the forthcoming movie, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1124037\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Free State of Jones<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Executive Director and forum curator <a href=\"http:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/profile\/539\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Wilson<\/a>, \u201cby looking at several brand new films that illuminate the Secrets of American History, we will consider the issues that arise when true stories of the past become the subject of our on-screen entertainment.\u201d To this end, on November 21, distinguished historians <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_W._Blight\" target=\"_blank\">David Blight<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hahn\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Hahn<\/a> will join <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gary_Ross\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Ross<\/a>, the movie\u2019s director and screenplay author, to discuss the challenges of bringing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3718\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Free State of Jones<\/em><\/a> to the Big Screen.<\/p>\n<p>The forum will also address the ways in which \u201cfilms reflect the social, political, and cultural concerns of the times in which they were made,\u201d which speaks to the question posed on Twitter by <a href=\"http:\/\/cwmemory.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Levin<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/cwmemory.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Civil War Memory<\/em><\/a>: \u201cWhat has changed in our <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War<\/a> memory to make room for just such a movie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good question.
