Thomas (JT) examines how public and scientific accounts of racism draw upon medical and psychological models, and how this contributes to our understandings of racism as a medical, rather than social, problem.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In June of 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Riley_Cooper\" target=\"_blank\">Riley Cooper<\/a>, a wide receiver for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Football_League\" target=\"_blank\">NFL\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philadelphia_Eagles\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Eagles<\/a>, was caught on video at a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenny_Chesney\" target=\"_blank\">Kenny Chesney<\/a> concert shouting, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=x1Wg51SREFw\" target=\"_blank\">I will jump that fence and fight every nigger in here, bro!<\/a>\u201d After a massive public uproar about the scene, Cooper, who is white, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/eagles\/2013\/07\/31\/after-racial-slur-eagles-wide-receiver-riley-cooper-apologizes-to-teammates-n-word\/2606483\/\" target=\"_blank\">released a statement<\/a> announcing that he would speak with \u201ca variety of professionals\u201d in order to \u201dhelp me better understand how I could have done something that was so offensive, and how I can start the healing process for everyone.\u201d His team excused Cooper from activities so that he could get expert help to \u201cunderstand how his words hurt so many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was hardly the first time a high-profile figure sought professional counseling after being associated with an act of public racism. In 2006, while performing at a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Hollywood,_California\" target=\"_blank\">West Hollywood<\/a> comedy club, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Richards\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Richards<\/a>, best known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cosmo_Kramer\" target=\"_blank\">Kramer<\/a> from the hit television series <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seinfeld\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Seinfeld<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BoLPLsQbdt0\" target=\"_blank\">lashed out at hecklers<\/a>, referring to them as \u201cniggers.\u201d Afterward, Richards\u2019 publicist quickly issued a statement announcing that his client would seek psychiatric help. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paula_Deen\" target=\"_blank\">Paula Deen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mel_Gibson\" target=\"_blank\">Mel Gibson<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Rocker\" target=\"_blank\">John Rocker<\/a> also pledged publicly to seek treatment for their racism\u2014reflecting a growing tendency to frame racist acts as a mental health issue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/1536504214558213\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/RacismRx2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small><a href=\"http:\/\/cassandraeve.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cassandra Conlin<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>How did racism come to be seen as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychopathology\" target=\"_blank\">psychopathological<\/a>, and how might that understanding influence efforts to combat racism? With that question in mind, I examined mainstream print media, and conference proceedings, presidential addresses, and debates within the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Psychiatric_Association\" target=\"_blank\">American Psychiatric Association<\/a> from the period immediately following <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\" target=\"_blank\">World War II<\/a> through the present. I also analyzed public speeches by civil rights activists from the late 1950s through the early 1970s<\/p>\n<p>Over time, this research shows, experts expressed growing concern about the psychopathological consequences of racism on victims, and the effects of being racist\u2014a mental health discourse that is transforming our understanding of the nature and causes of racism. In this medicalized model, new protocols focus on treating those who suffer from the condition of racism.
