He marched in rallies for race equality and was actively involved in uplifting the Black community. When I was growing up, he often had me watch the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\" target=\"_blank\">PBS<\/a> series \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/amex\/eyesontheprize\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eyes on the Prize<\/a>,\u201d which documented the events of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African-American_Civil_Rights_Movement_(1954%E2%80%9368)\" target=\"_blank\">Civil Rights Movement<\/a>. Nestled inside my baby book is an autograph from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Panther_Party\" target=\"_blank\">Black Panther<\/a> leader <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huey_P._Newton\" target=\"_blank\">Huey Newton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When I was a little girl, my dad said, \u201cPeople will want to label you as only black, but you\u2019re biracial.\u201d My dad wasn\u2019t ashamed of his blackness. Just like many fathers, he loved that I resembled both of my parents. My dad knew the world would see me as more black than white, but he wanted me to identify in a way that honored both sides of my genealogy.
