What are the experiences of multiracial Asian American children? What\u2019s missing in the media representations of multiracial kids?<\/p>\n<p>Writer, scholar and activist <a href=\"http:\/\/multiasianfamilies.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sharon H. Chang<\/a> talked with <em>AsAmNews<\/em> about her multiracial family and the findings from her research on multiracial Asian American children from her new book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=37319\" target=\"_blank\">Raising Mixed Race: Multiracial Asian Children in a Post-Racial World<\/a><\/em>. Below are some edited excerpts from their conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You and your husband are both multiracial Asian Americans\u2014describe your family\u2019s cultural mash-up.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our collective family ancestry is Japanese, Taiwanese\/Chinese, Slovakian, German, French Canadian, British, Welsh \u2013 American. But culturally we feel multiethnic, mixed, 2nd gen Asian American.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you and your husband talk about your child about being multiracial in America?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We talk pretty openly about systemic racial inequities in front of him. We don\u2019t hide those struggles and even encourage him to participate in the conversations when he\u2019s interested. Then regarding his own identity (i.e. relationship to those racial struggles) we don\u2019t tell him he\u2019s white. Because he\u2019s not.
