La conqu\u00eate de vastes empires coloniaux par les puissances europ\u00e9ennes, suivie par des mouvements migratoires d\u2019ampleur variable selon les territoires et les \u00e9poques, a donn\u00e9 naissance \u00e0 de nouvelles soci\u00e9t\u00e9s. Les principaux groupes humains, indig\u00e8nes, sous diff\u00e9rentes appellations, colons d\u2019origine europ\u00e9enne et leurs descendants, et parfois esclaves arrach\u00e9s au continent africain, se sont m\u00e9lang\u00e9s parfois rapidement et avec une forte intensit\u00e9, parfois plus tardivement ou marginalement. Les unions, officialis\u00e9es par des mariages ou rest\u00e9es consensuelles, provoqu\u00e9 l\u2019apparition de nouvelles g\u00e9n\u00e9rations m\u00e9tisses et ainsi qu\u2019un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne de cr\u00e9olisation. L\u2019effectif de chacun de ces groupes humains, et l\u2019existence \u00e9ventuelle de barri\u00e8res entre eux, ont produit des degr\u00e9s de m\u00e9tissage tr\u00e8s divers que les administrateurs des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s coloniales ont tent\u00e9 de classifier. Les seize textes r\u00e9unis dans cet ouvrage abordent la mani\u00e8re dont les populations se sont m\u00e9lang\u00e9es, ainsi que la position des m\u00e9tis dans les nouvelles soci\u00e9t\u00e9s. Ces questions sont abord\u00e9es dans une perspective de long terme, du XVIe au XXe si\u00e8cle, et \u00e0 propos de nombreux territoires, du Canada \u00e0 la Bolivie, des Antilles \u00e0 Madagascar, de l\u2019Alg\u00e9rie \u00e0 l\u2019Angola.<\/p>\n

The conquest of large colonial empires by European powers, followed by migratory flows, more or less important depending on places and periods, gave birth to new societies. The most important human groups, indigenous, European born settlers and their descendants, and sometimes slaves snatched from the African continent<\/a>, mixed, more or less early, more or less intensely. Unions, legally registered or not, and misgeneration [miscegenation<\/a>?] lead to the appearance of mixed-blood generations and to a process of creolisation. The numerical strength of these human groups, and the existence of barriers between them, produced various degrees of misgeneration that the authorities of the colonial societies tried to identify and to classify. The sixteen texts gathered in this book study the way that these populations got mixed, and the place of mixed-blood people in the new societies.
