{"id":44600,"date":"2015-12-15T01:44:48","date_gmt":"2015-12-15T01:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=44600"},"modified":"2015-12-15T01:44:48","modified_gmt":"2015-12-15T01:44:48","slug":"first-baptist-unveils-historic-marker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=44600","title":{"rendered":"First Baptist unveils historic marker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/local\/sumner\/gallatin\/2015\/12\/09\/first-baptist-unveils-historic-marker\/77050200\/\" target=\"_blank\">First Baptist unveils historic marker<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennessean.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Tennesseean<\/a><br \/>\nNashville, Tennessee<br \/>\n2015-12-09<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JenniferMEaston\" target=\"_blank\">Jennifer Easton<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If people of faith go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstbaptistgallatin.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">First Baptist Church<\/a> on East Winchester Street looking for a sign, they\u2019ll find it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sumner_County,_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Sumner County\u2019s<\/a> oldest known African-American church celebrated another milestone Dec. 6 with the dedication of a historic marker commemorating the 150-year-old church\u2019s early beginnings and role in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s event closed out a year of special events marking the church\u2019s sesquicentennial celebration that kicked off last January.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1865 by the Rev. Robert Belote, an 80-year-old ex-slave from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Castalian_Springs,_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Castalian Springs<\/a>, services were first held in a log cabin on the church&#8217;s present-day site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts first members were freed slaves. They had no jobs, no education, no organizations to help them, no schools and nowhere to go,\u201d said the Rev. Derrick Jackson, pastor of First Baptist since 2001&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230;Expansion and Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The church experienced tremendous growth and expansion under the leadership of the Rev. Peter Vertrees, who served as pastor from 1874-1926.<\/p>\n<p>Vertrees was a prominent local leader who established numerous churches and schools. He founded East Fork Missionary Baptist Association, made up of 28 churches in Sumner, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Davidson_County,_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Davidson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trousdale_County,_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Trousdale<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robertson_County,_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Robertson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macon_County,_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Macon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilson_County,_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Wilson<\/a> counties. He is considered one of the most influential figures in Sumner County and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Middle Tennessee<\/a> history.<\/p>\n<p>Born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky\" target=\"_blank\">Kentucky<\/a> in 1840 to a white mother and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=451\" target=\"_blank\">mulatto<\/a> father, he served in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War<\/a> as a black <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Confederate_States_Army\" target=\"_blank\">Confederate<\/a> soldier, and afterward he moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gallatin,_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Gallatin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Under Vertrees&#8217; leadership, First Baptist expanded its congregation and built a framed church, according to Brinkley. A violent windstorm destroyed the framed building around 1905, and a new building was erected from bricks Vertrees purchased cheaply from an old penitentiary.
