It was, as Stanford historian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allysonhobbs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Allyson Hobbs<\/a> writes, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=36295\" target=\"_blank\">a chosen exile<\/a>, a separation from one racial identity and a leap into another. Her work explores the way this racial indeterminacy offered an escape from slavery in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_the_United_States_(1789%E2%80%931849)\" target=\"_blank\">antebellum<\/a> South and helped defy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=4781\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Crow<\/a>.
