This is more about range then representation, voice more than volume. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles<\/a> has close to 60 percent people of color, 225 languages spoken at home, and some of the richest and poorest persons in the country. With an expansive 502.7 square miles of city (and beyond, including the massive county of 4,752.32 square miles), the poetry draws on imagery, words, stories, and imaginations that are also vast, encompassing, a real &#8220;leaves of grass.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well-known poets include Holly Prado, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rub%C3%A9n_Mart%C3%ADnez_(writer)\" target=\"_blank\">Ruben Martinez<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tuesdaynightproject.org\/staff\/traci-kato-kiriyama\/\" target=\"_blank\">traci kato-kiriyama<\/a>, and Lynne Thompson. Many strong new voices, however, makes this a well-rounded collection for any literary class, program, bookstore, or event.<\/p>\n<p>The image of the coiled serpent appears in various forms in mythologies throughout <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asia\" target=\"_blank\">Asia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\" target=\"_blank\">Africa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europe\" target=\"_blank\">Europe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\">India<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Americas\" target=\"_blank\">America<\/a>. In pre-conquest times, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quetzalcoatl\" target=\"_blank\">Quetzalcoatl<\/a>\u2014the Precious Serpent\u2014served as a personification of earth-bound wisdom, the arts and eldership in so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mesoamerica\" target=\"_blank\">Meso-America<\/a>, one of seven &#8220;cradles of civilization&#8221; that also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nigeria\" target=\"_blank\">Nigeria<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mesopotamia\" target=\"_blank\">Mesopotamia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Egypt\" target=\"_blank\">Egypt<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indus_River\" target=\"_blank\">Indus Valley<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peru\" target=\"_blank\">Peru<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This anthology features the vitality and variety of verse in the City of Angels, a city of poets.
