She was 94.<\/p>\n<p>Her death was confirmed by her biographer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.augustachiwy.com\/film.html#bios\" target=\"_blank\">Martin King<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Chiwy (pronounced CHEE-wee) was mentioned in passing only as \u201cAnna,\u201d a black nurse from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belgian_Congo\" target=\"_blank\">Congo<\/a>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_E._Ambrose\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Ambrose\u2019s<\/a> book \u201cBand of Brothers.\u201d She was played by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm3047818\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rebecca Okot<\/a> in an episode of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Band_of_Brothers_(miniseries)\" target=\"_blank\">television series based on the book<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It took Mr. King, a British military historian, to trace her to a retirement home near Brussels, overcome a condition called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Selective_mutism\" target=\"_blank\">selective mutism<\/a>, which prevented her from speaking about her wartime experience, and finally identify her in a 2010 book published abroad titled \u201cThe Forgotten Nurse.\u201d His TV documentary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/123245095\" target=\"_blank\">Searching for Augusta: The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne<\/a>\u201d was released last year.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of Mr. King\u2019s efforts, 67 years after her battlefield heroism, Ms. Chiwy was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/13\/world\/europe\/us-honors-belgian-nurse-for-heroism-in-world-war-ii.html\" target=\"_blank\">awarded the Army\u2019s Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service<\/a> \u201cfor selfless service and bravery\u201d and knighted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albert_II_of_Belgium\" target=\"_blank\">king of Belgium<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"302\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/26\/world\/europe\/augusta-chiwy-forgotten-wartime-nurse-dies-at-94.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2015\/08\/26\/world\/26CHIWY2-obit\/26CHIWY2-obit-superJumbo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>A book in 2010 about Ms. Chiwy&#8217;s experiences.<\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&#8230;Augusta Marie Chiwy was born on June 6, 1921, in a village near the Rwandan border that is now part of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burundi\" target=\"_blank\">Burundi<\/a>. Her father, Henri, was a veterinarian from Belgium. Her mother was Congolese.<\/p>\n<p>Her father took her to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bastogne\" target=\"_blank\">Bastogne<\/a> when she was 9. She planned on becoming a teacher, but when the war began she turned to nursing.<\/p>\n<p>She married a Belgian soldier, Jacques Cornet, in 1950. They had two children, Alain and Christine, who survive her.<\/p>\n<p>She later worked in a hospital treating patients with spinal injuries.
