{"id":44761,"date":"2015-12-23T22:27:48","date_gmt":"2015-12-23T22:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=44761"},"modified":"2015-12-23T22:27:48","modified_gmt":"2015-12-23T22:27:48","slug":"jose-mauricio-nunes-garcia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=44761","title":{"rendered":"Jos\u00e9 Maur\u00edcio Nunes Garcia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jos%C3%A9_Maur%C3%ADcio_Nunes_Garcia\" target=\"_blank\">Jos\u00e9 Maur\u00edcio Nunes Garcia<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia<\/a><br \/>\nLast modified: 2015-12-08<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Maur\u00edcio Nunes Garcia (September 20, 1767 \u2013 April 18, 1830) was a <a title=\"Brazil\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brazil\" target=\"_blank\">Brazilian<\/a> classical composer, one of the greatest exponents of <a title=\"Classicism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Classicism\" target=\"_blank\">Classicism<\/a> in the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>Born in <a title=\"Rio de Janeiro\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rio_de_Janeiro\" target=\"_blank\">Rio de Janeiro<\/a>, son of <a title=\"Mulatto\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=451\" target=\"_blank\">mulattos<\/a>, Nunes Garcia lost his father at an early age, and his mother perceived that her son had an inclination for becoming a musician and, for this reason, improved her work to allow him to continue his musical studies.<\/p>\n<p>Nunes Garcia became a priest and, when prince <a title=\"John VI of Portugal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_VI_of_Portugal\" target=\"_blank\">John VI of Portugal<\/a> came to Rio de Janeiro with his 15,000 people, Nunes Garcia was appointed Master of the Royal Chapel. He sang and played the <a title=\"Harpsichord\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harpsichord\" target=\"_blank\">harpsichord<\/a>, performing his compositions as well as those of other composers such as <a title=\"Domenico Cimarosa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domenico_Cimarosa\" target=\"_blank\">Domenico Cimarosa<\/a> and <a title=\"Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart\" target=\"_blank\">Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart<\/a>. He was a very prestigious musician in the royal court of John VI.<\/p>\n<p>His musical style was strongly influenced by Viennese composers of the period, such as Mozart and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Haydn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haydn\" target=\"_blank\">Haydn<\/a>. Today, some 240 musical pieces written by Nunes Garcia survive, and at least 170 others are known to have been lost<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webcitation.org\/query?url=http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/nunes_garcia\/JM_E_Wrk.htm&amp;date=2009-10-25+23:51:27\" target=\"_blank\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>.
