Stanford professor and author shines light on racial \u2018passing\u2019 at NCRM<\/a> event.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cPassing<\/a>\u201d \u2013 living as a part of one race despite being born into another \u2013 is often full of complexity and consequences, so much so that author and Stanford history professor Dr. Allyson Hobbs<\/a> calls it a type of \u201cexile.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hobbs, author of \u201cA Chosen Exile: AHistory of Racial Passing in American Life<\/a>,\u201dexamined the topic of racial passing during \u201cBook Talk\u201d at the National Civil Rights Museum<\/a> last week (Dec. 17). During the event, Hobbs discussed topics such as the negative side of passing and her perception of former Spokane, Washington NAACP<\/a> president Rachel Dolezal<\/a>, who, despite being born white, lived as (and still identifies as) a black woman…<\/p>\n
