Judges hail daring use of form in a collection that examines poet\u2019s joint British and Chinese heritage<\/em><\/p>\n

A new voice, who judges say \u201cwill change British poetry\u201d, has won the TS Eliot poetry prize<\/a>. Sarah Howe<\/a>, a fellow at Harvard University\u2019s Radcliffe Institute, was awarded the \u00a320,000 prize for Loop of Jade<\/em><\/a>, which explores her dual British and Chinese heritage.<\/p>\n

Howe\u2019s work \u2013 the first debut poetry collection to win the British prize since it was inaugurated in 1993 \u2013 triumphed over a particularly strong shortlist, which featured some of poetry\u2019s biggest names, including Don Paterson<\/a>, Claudia Rankine<\/a>, Sean O\u2019Brien<\/a> and Les Murray<\/a>…<\/p>\n
