What does \u201cGirls and Their Mothers\u201d entail? Who are these women?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kim Simpson<\/strong>: \u201cGirls and Their Mothers\u201d is a collection of portraits of mixed race girls, of all ages, with their mothers\u200a\u2014\u200a48 portraits featuring 16 different families in a mix of individual and group portraits.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of questioning their ancestry or scrutinizing their appearance, I chose to photograph girls and women of mixed heritage and their mothers with an intent to question social perception. These images display their relationships, linking these girls and their mothers together while at the same time respecting their disparity&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/vantage\/photographing-multiracial-families-in-scotland-c07edef3963b\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d262ilb51hltx0.cloudfront.net\/max\/2000\/1*tO-fBSinj7TY-OfF7KYGsg.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Image courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.craveimages.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kim Simpson<\/a>.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8230;EvH: What sort of national dialogue, or vocabulary even, around race and appearance exists in Scotland? Is it discussed in school, for instance? I\u2019m interested in thinking about this in comparison to the current <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Lives_Matter\" target=\"_blank\">Black Lives Matter movement<\/a> in the U.S., and the greater mainstream attention to identity issues of multiracial individuals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>KS<\/strong>: Black Lives Matter is extremely relevant in Scotland, especially at the moment. We have had an awful tragedy that saw the senseless end of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/sheku-bayoh\" target=\"_blank\">Sheku Bayoh\u2019s<\/a> life at the hands of police officers as he was suffocated during an arrest in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fife\" target=\"_blank\">Fife<\/a>, Scotland.
