Adrienne Dawes<\/a> donned denim recently when she stopped by Salvage Vanguard Theater<\/a> for a rehearsal of her latest play to debut at the indie East Austin venue.<\/p>\n

\u201cDenim Doves\u201d opens this weekend.<\/p>\n

The play has been several years in development, but that the dystopian future world Dawes and her collaborators imagined is populated with people wearing all denim \u2014 well, that detail was decided on from the beginning…<\/p>\n

…Dawes, a native Austinite, spent three years training and performing with Chicago\u2019s famed Second City comedy troupe after college in New York. Under her \u201cHeckle Her\u201d production company, Dawes devises sketch comedy shows like the upcoming \u201cLove Me Tindr,\u201d a musical spoof of the online dating app, which opens Valentine\u2019s Day weekend in Salvage Vanguard\u2019s studio theater.<\/p>\n

Dawes\u2019 trenchant and intense drama \u201cAm I White\u201d<\/a>, which played at Salvage Vanguard in October 2014, netted the David Mark Cohen New Play Award from the Austin Critics Table Awards.<\/p>\n

A sharp and gutsy look at racial identity, \u201cAm I White<\/a>\u201d is based on the real-life story of convicted felon Leo Felton<\/a>, a white supremacist who hid his own biracial identity while plotting to bomb public sites.<\/p>\n

Lauded by local critics<\/a>, \u201cAm I White\u201d is currently being considered for production by theater companies around the country.<\/p>\n

Dawes, who is herself of mixed race, spent years working on \u201cAm I White,\u201d and an early workshop version attracted the attention of the incarcerated Felton, who emailed Dawes from prison. Though Dawes exchanged a few emails with Felton during the development of \u201cAm I White,\u201d she declined to continue communication with him after the play\u2019s premiere.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe play is my creation, not his story,\u201d she says with finality…<\/p>\n
