Her moving-image installation, <em>The Matter of Memory<\/em>, was exhibited at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carrollfletcher.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Carroll \/ Fletcher Gallery<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a> in 2014 alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Akomfrah\" target=\"_blank\">John Akomfrah<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/rashaadnewsome.com\/#work\/performance\/shade-compositions-sfmoma-2012\" target=\"_blank\">Rashaad Newsome<\/a>. She is involved in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transnational.org.uk\/people\/80-professor-paul-goodwin\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Goodwin\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/cultural\/-\/Past-Projects\/AfricanDiasporaArtists.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">African Diaspora Artists of the 21st Century<\/a> project and is currently collaborating with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Binyavanga_Wainaina\" target=\"_blank\">Binyavanga Wainaina<\/a> on a digital literary project called <em>Since Everything Suddens in the Hurricane<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Her work mainly focuses on \u2018transient middle points and passages of migration\u2019, hardly surprising given her upbringing. She was born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenya\" target=\"_blank\">Kenya<\/a>, she spent most of her childhood in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_East\" target=\"_blank\">Middle East<\/a> before coming to London where she now lives and works. She took some time to tell us about her exhibition at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gibca.se\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gothenburg Biennale<\/a> where she recreated her grandmother\u2019s living room and what\u2019s next for her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Could you tell us about the Gothenburg Biennale and your piece?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The theme of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gibca.se\/\" target=\"_blank\">GIBCA<\/a> this year is <em>A Story Within a Story<\/em>, a title allows us as artists the opportunity to really play with the construction of storytelling. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/edyanganiose\" target=\"_blank\">Elvira Dyangani Ose<\/a> is at the curatorial helm of GIBCA and has offered us this title with the aim of contesting history, of rewriting it from new and perhaps previously silenced vantage points.<\/p>\n<p>Curatorially, she has brought together works that seek to re-examine and possibly debunk predetermined histories, histories constructed in stuffy seats of power in order to control the collective memory of who we are, where we are, why we are, and how we came to be. The question she and the Biennale are asking the audience is: \u2018If you could rewrite history, what would you do?\u2019 It\u2019s a very participatory experience.
