Gen. Nadja West<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=45631\" target=\"_blank\">has been appointed<\/a> as the Army\u2019s 44th <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surgeon_General_of_the_United_States_Army\" target=\"_blank\">Surgeon General<\/a>. With this appointment comes a promotion to lieutenant general, which makes West the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Army\" target=\"_blank\">Army\u2019s<\/a> first black female 3-star general as well as the highest ranking female of any race to graduate from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Military_Academy\" target=\"_blank\">West Point<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>West started as a child in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" target=\"_blank\">Germany<\/a> five decades ago. She came into the world a <em><a href=\"http:\/\/afrogermans.us\/german-brown-babies-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">mischlingskinder<\/a><\/em> or \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/afrogermans.us\/adoption\/\" target=\"_blank\">brown baby<\/a>\u201d\u2014one of many children borne of liaisons between African American servicemen and German women. Orphaned as a baby, she was adopted at nine months by Oscar and Mabel Grammer. Oscar Grammer worked as a chief warrant officer in the U.S. Army. Mabel Grammer was a civil rights activist and journalist who, at one point, wrote for the <em>Afro American <\/em>Newspapers. Together the couple adopted 12 children; West was the youngest.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, February 9 (2016), Lt.
