Adams<\/a><\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Historically, black men and women in the United States frequently linked national and geopolitical concerns. Recognizing that the condition of black people in the United States was \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/2568605?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents\" target=\"_blank\">but a local phase of a world problem<\/a>,\u201d black activists articulated global visions of freedom and employed a range of strategies intent on shaping foreign policies and influencing world events.<\/p>\n<p>During the early twentieth century, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaregistry.org\/historic_events\/view\/news-publisher-extraordinare-john-q-adams\" target=\"_blank\">John Q. Adams<\/a>, an African American journalist, called on people of African descent to link their experiences and concerns with those of people of color in other parts of the globe. Born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisville,_Kentucky\" target=\"_blank\">Louisville, Kentucky<\/a> in 1848, Adams <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/african-americans-in-minnesota\/oclc\/49610982&amp;referer=brief_results\" target=\"_blank\">moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1886<\/a>, where he became associate editor, and subsequent owner, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Appeal\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Appeal<\/em> newspaper<\/a>. The paper\u2019s debut coincided with key historical developments of the period including the hardening of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=4781\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Jim Crow segregation laws<\/a>, the rising tide of anti-immigration sentiment, and the rapid growth of American imperial expansion overseas&#8230;<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"552\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/newspage\/86482267\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imperialglobalexeter.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/02\/the-appeal.png?w=1520&amp;h=726\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small><em>John Q.
