{"id":45832,"date":"2016-03-01T01:27:36","date_gmt":"2016-03-01T01:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=45832"},"modified":"2016-03-01T01:27:36","modified_gmt":"2016-03-01T01:27:36","slug":"on-creoles-colorism-and-confronting-our-triggers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=45832","title":{"rendered":"On Creoles, Colorism and Confronting our Triggers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blackandblewish.com\/2016\/02\/13\/on-creoles-colorism-and-confronting-our-triggers\/\" target=\"_blank\">On Creoles, Colorism and Confronting our Triggers<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blackandblewish.com\" target=\"_blank\">Black and Blewish<\/a><br \/>\n2016-02-13<\/p>\n<p><strong>TaRessa Stovall<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By now everyone with media access knows of (and likely has an opinion about) <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beyonc%C3%A9\" target=\"_blank\">Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s<\/a> new \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Formation_(song)\" target=\"_blank\">Formation<\/a>\u201d video and Super Bowl halftime performance. She dropped the video on an otherwise slow news Saturday, February 6, and on the very next day, she symbolically won the Super Bowl by eclipsing headline halftime performers <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coldplay\" target=\"_blank\">Coldplay<\/a> and adjunct <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruno_Mars\" target=\"_blank\">Bruno Mars<\/a>, generating more headlines and conversation than the actual game.<\/p>\n<p>The first wave of responses was a fairly unanimous rave by Black women for the I Love My Black Self, Family and Culture symbolism that season \u201cFormation.\u201d The second, post-Super Bowl, was dissecting Bey &amp; Company\u2019s performance nods to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Panther_Party\" target=\"_blank\">Black Panther Party for Self Defense<\/a>, which shares a 50th anniversary year with the Super Bowl and took root in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_Bay_Area\" target=\"_blank\">Bay Area<\/a>, near the Super Bowl\u2019s stadium in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santa_Clara,_California\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Clara, California<\/a> on the day when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trayvon_Martin\" target=\"_blank\">Trayvon Martin<\/a> would have turned 21 and the weekend when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Death_of_Sandra_Bland\" target=\"_blank\">Sandra Bland<\/a> would have turned 29 had they not been victims of brutally racist murders&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Beyond all the pro-vs.-anti Bey brouhaha, what got my attention was when <a href=\"http:\/\/yabablay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Yaba Blay<\/a>, a well-known expert on Black racial identity and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discrimination_based_on_skin_color\" target=\"_blank\">colorism<\/a>, shared her own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=45592\" target=\"_blank\">responses to \u201cFormation,\u201d in <em>Colorlines<\/em><\/a>, and outed a truth with which many of us wrestle: how to balance our awareness of blatant Black-on-Black colorism when it\u2019s embodied in otherwise enjoyable African American and (at least somewhat) affirming popular culture.<\/p>\n<p>While we all know intellectually that colorism is global and in no way specific to African Americans, it doesn\u2019t lessen the pain felt by those on the receiving end. My own a<a href=\"http:\/\/blackandblewish.com\/2013\/06\/26\/beautiful-dark-and-light-our-souls\/\" target=\"_blank\">dmitted obsession with colorism<\/a> moves me to call it out and confront it more often than is popular.
