{"id":45878,"date":"2016-03-03T01:51:21","date_gmt":"2016-03-03T01:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=45878"},"modified":"2016-03-03T02:12:07","modified_gmt":"2016-03-03T02:12:07","slug":"mixed-race-korean-adoptees-use-dna-to-search-for-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=45878","title":{"rendered":"Mixed-Race Korean Adoptees Use DNA to Search For Roots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/mixed-race-korean-adoptees-use-dna-search-roots-n525586\" target=\"_blank\">Mixed-Race Korean Adoptees Use DNA to Search For Roots<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\" target=\"_blank\">NBC News<\/a><br \/>\n2016-03-02<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"mailto:yj.magnet@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\">Young Jin Kim<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sarah Savidakis, 55, lived in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Korea\" target=\"_blank\">South Korea<\/a> until she was nine years old, at which time she was adopted by a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Connecticut\" target=\"_blank\">Connecticut<\/a> family.<\/p>\n<p>For Savidakis, who says she has grappled with the effects of early childhood trauma, memories of her life in Korea \u2014 including those of her birth mother \u2014 vanished around the time she arrived in the United States in 1970.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have some flashbacks here and there,&#8221; Savidakis, who lives in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tarpon_Springs,_Florida\" target=\"_blank\">Tarpon Springs, Florida<\/a>, told NBC News. &#8220;But to this day, my mother is [like] a ghost or a silhouette.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Savidakis is among the thousands of mixed-race children born in the aftermath of the Korean War to American or U.N. soldier fathers and Korean mothers \u2014 many of whom were adopted into American families.<\/p>\n<p>Seeking information about her birth parents, Savidakis in September tested her DNA through a commercial genealogy service and identified a first cousin, once removed. The relative helped her identify and connect with a half-brother and half-sister.
