C.T. Vivian rode with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freedom_Riders\" target=\"_blank\">Freedom Riders<\/a>, organized sit-ins in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nashville,_Tennessee\" target=\"_blank\">Nashville<\/a> and worked closely with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many years later, before the 2008 election, he traveled the country along with other civil rights leaders exclaiming to voters that a Barack Obama presidency was exactly the kind of prize that they had been fighting for all their lives.<\/p>\n<p>All of that came back to him during a meeting at the White House three weeks ago between <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">President Obama<\/a> and several of those leaders. Mr. Vivian told the president how proud he was of him, and how sad he was to see him go.<\/p>\n<p>And then he began to cry&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;But if seven years under President Obama has opened possibilities for black Americans, many of those interviewed were torn about his lasting impact on race relations.<\/p>\n<p>They were, on one hand, hard-pressed to imagine a white president saying \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/video\/us\/politics\/100000002346395\/obama-speaks-on-the-zimmerman-verdict.html\" target=\"_blank\">Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago<\/a>,\u201d inviting the Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and the white police officer who had confronted him to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/31\/us\/politics\/31obama.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">White House \u201cbeer summit,\u201d<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/politics\/first-draft\/2015\/07\/06\/obamabaker\/\" target=\"_blank\">singing \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d<\/a> at the funeral of the pastor who was one of the nine black churchgoers gunned down in Charleston, S.C., last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are losing a soldier who has actually been through the things that individuals are going through,\u201d said Jakya\u2019s father, Jevon Hobbs, 42. \u201cNone of the current candidates,\u201d he said, \u201cknow what it\u2019s like to be accosted by the police for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, they said they did not believe a white president would have heard \u201cYou lie!\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/video\/us\/politics\/100000002346395\/obama-speaks-on-the-zimmerman-verdict.html\" target=\"_blank\">shouted at him<\/a> from the floor of Congress; or would have had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/28\/us\/politics\/28obama.html\" target=\"_blank\">his birth certificate challenged<\/a> and then seen a man who challenged it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/01\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-conspiracy-theories.html\" target=\"_blank\">become the front-runner<\/a> for the Republican presidential nomination&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/13\/us\/politics\/proud-of-obamas-presidency-blacks-are-sad-to-see-him-go.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Proud of Obama\u2019s Presidency, Blacks Are Sad to See Him Go The New York Times 2016-03-12 Yamiche Alcindor CHICAGO \u2014 In his 30s and 40s, the Rev.
